Key to Town Centre regeneration is redevelopment of bus station area5.19.16pm GMT Fri 15th Jun 2007
Commenting on the issue of the redevelopment of Bedford Town Centre, Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Michael Headley said: "I believe that the rejected overdevelopment of Riverside Square is only a side issue in the overall regeneration plans for the town centre. The scheme that is key to the town's regeneration has always been the redevelopment of the bus station area. The first steps for this scheme were put in place with all-party support prior to the Borough's first Mayoral election. However, clear challenges regarding parking and housing issues exist and it will take a lot of skill and a great deal of work with local residents to see this scheme through to the successful conclusion that this town and the wider borough deserves. Liberal Democrats are committed to revitalising our town centre. In fact, the £3 million that is being spent on town centre redevelopment was allocated under the Lib Dems. We will continue to show this commitment by working with others to ensure that Bedford Town Centre is redeveloped with the interests of Borough residents at its heart."
