Lib Dems Welcome Government Go-Ahead for Bedford Borough Unitary
12.34.00pm GMT Thu 6th Mar 2008
Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have welcomed the Government's decision that Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire will become Unitary Authorities in 2009.
Commenting, Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Michael Headley said:
"The decision of the government is excellent news for residents of Bedford Borough. The hard work to create a new single tier of local government can now begin. Residents need improved services, run more efficiently, and that must be the priority for the new unitary authority for Bedford Borough.'
"The time for the County Council to recognise that it must work with the Borough towards the goal of creating a successful new authority is long overdue. There is a lot of work to be done in a short space of time, and it is essential that everyone is pulling in the same direction for the benefit of local people."
