GP Shortage

Local Liberal Democrats are leading calls for NHS managers to commit to fund new doctors’ surgeries.

Bedford Borough has one of the highest numbers of residents per doctor in the country. The Liberal Democrats successfully campaigned for Shortstown surgery to open in 2020 but funding for more surgeries was cut by NHS managers in 2023.

Having secured funding for the buildings, the delivery of these surgeries is still unsure as NHS managers have not committed to funding the new doctors and running costs.

It is just not acceptable that our doctors are still overstretched and we call on local NHS managers to back ongoing funding for the new surgeries in places across Bedford Borough.
