Bedford’s roads are full of potholes, yet over £2 million allocated for maintenance is unspent this year.

Papers for the Budget Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 12th March stated that the underspend recorded this year is

‘£1.750 million due to the review of the contingencies within projects in the Highways (BBC funded) scheme’

This is on top of £700,000 already moved out of this year’s budget in February. This makes a total of £2.45million that was supposed to be spent this year that now won’t be.

Cllr Christine McHugh (Liberal Democrat, Goldington) commented,

“Residents will be appalled to hear that so much money, allocated to road maintenance for this year, remains unspent.  You only have to look at the state of the roads to see that this money desperately needs to be used now and not delayed.  What has the Mayor been doing?  Has he not been on top of this – making sure that the maximum amount of work is completed?  Whilst road users have been desperately avoiding potholes it seems that he has been asleep at the wheel again.”
