ST MARY’S STREET OPENS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Cllr Charles Royden is pleased to announce that St Mary's Street has fully reopened ahead of schedule following vital repair works.
The repair works started on Monday 3rd October after a ground radar survey earlier this year found the road was in serious danger of collapse due to a lack of drainage on the eastern side of the carriageway.
In order to repair the road and install effective drainage systems, the carriageway needed to be completely rebuilt with traffic restrictions in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The traffic management and restrictions have now been removed and the road has completely reopened in both directions. A final Sunday closure will take place on November 27th to allow the last remaining works to take place.
Councillor Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Transport, said: "It is great news that this vital and extremely challenging project has been finished ahead of schedule.
"When we realised that the road was collapsing we had to move quickly to lay a new road and install the missing drainage. This lack of drainage had caused problems for businesses and eroded away the foundations of the carriageway making it unsafe.
"I would like to again take this opportunity to apologise for the inconvenience caused to local residents, businesses and motorists and give credit to everybody involved in this project for gettingBedfordback to business ahead of schedule with an outstanding new and improved road. New pavement works will now continue for some weeks which will greatly enhance the area."
The closure on Sunday 27th November is scheduled to last between 7am and 9pm.
