Bedford's MP Lets Down Our Students

30 Jun 2003

Bedford Liberal Democrats have slammed Bedford's Labour MP for his support of the Government's Plans to introduce University Top Up fees.

Last week Parliament voted on this contentious issue. The motion called on the Government "not to allow universities to introduce top-up fees." Bedford's MP voted against this motion and backed the government, unlike other Labour MPs who defied the party whip.

Lib Dem spokesperson Michael Headley said

"This was a critical test for Labour MP s and I'm afraid Bedford's MP failed it. Top Up fees are a disastrous policy. No student with the talent to do so, should be prevented from going to University because of poverty or fear of debt. This is quite rightly a very unpopular policy and its very disappointing that we have an MP who has let down his constituents so badly."
