Bedford to Oxford Rail Announcement is Fantastic News for Bedford Borough

29 Nov 2011

I am delighted that amongst the announcements in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement earlier today came a commitment from the Government to the delivery of the Western Section of the East-West railway line, between Bedford and Oxford via Milton Keynes.

This fantastic news for Bedford Borough. The reason we have campaigned so vociferously for East-West rail over the years is that it will bring huge benefits for the Borough. The development of the Bedford to Oxford line is an essential infrastructure project for our area, and it will enhance Bedford's reputation for being centrally located for business.

With the dualling of the A421 now complete, and construction of the final phase of the Bedford Western Bypass due to begin next year, this is further good news for growth and jobs in Bedford Borough.

There are details to follow about how this project will be delivered, but no doubt a developed business case will outline the clear economic benefits of the scheme, and I will continue to work through the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership and through the East West Rail Consortium to see this vital project delivered. We will also continue to press for the section of the line to the East, to Cambridge and beyond, to be delivered in the longer term.
