Council converts buildings to temporary accommodation

More temporary accommodation is being provided for homeless people in Bedford Borough.

The Council has converted a number of vacant properties into temporary accommodation for those who are homeless. Five properties have already been refurbished providing up to 17 bedrooms, with the first families moving in last month. More properties are expected to follow later in Spring this year.

These additional units of temporary accommodation will join a range of other accommodation and services which the Council provides for those who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

This programme of refurbishment and conversion is not just bringing formerly empty properties back into use, but it is providing much needed local temporary accommodation for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Providing temporary accommodation can be very costly, but the Council has a duty to ensure that those who are in need of such accommodation are housed. These works will help to continue to provide this housing more efficiently, and will help to ensure that the Council can continue to house people who are in need of temporary accommodation locally.
