More Of Bedford's Greenfields To Go

14 May 2001

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Michael Headley has slammed the Local Plan Inspectors report for proposing more housing to be built on our Green Belt. The Inspector wants 240 houses in North Brickhill (Freemans Common) and 200 between Norse Road and Renhold.

Michael Headley said:

"This is a disastrous plan. I don't believe that more housing is needed here at all. Both of these sites have had proposals before and quite rightly they have been turned down. I will be opposing this and I hope that the Council will listen to common sense and not give in to the inspector's proposals. The government is not doing enough to stop the pressure on our green areas. We need a tax on greenfield developments to encourage the use of derelict urban sites not the easy option of building on our fields."

Michael added:

"The development between Norse Road and Renhold will erode the space between these two communities and threaten the individual identity of Renhold. We must do everything to try to stop these plans. The danger is that these will just be the starting point for more building onwards."
