Victory against wasteful Conservative bridge-raising
The Conservatives have u-turned on their plans to splash out millions of pounds on a new bridge so that bigger boats can get under it.
“This should never have got this far,” said Cllr Vann. “When you are told you are going bankrupt, you don’t spend money on a vanity project like raising a bridge so canal boats can get to a canal that doesn’t even exist yet.”
“Why does the Conservative Mayor always have to be dragged to the right decision for local residents and taxpayers? This project was voted on and put forward by the Conservative-led Executive only last week. They have only undertaken this U-turn because they knew such wasteful spending wouldn’t get through Full Council this evening. We welcome the U-turn but regret that it took opposition Councillors to object to get to this more responsible position.”
