Coronavirus Variant of Concern identified in Bedford Borough
Bedford Borough Council has been notified of 7 cases of a variant known as VOC-21APR-02 (first identified in India). The variant was identified after genetic sequencing was carried out on positive COVID-19 tests.

Police and Crime Commissioner Election first preference results
The first preference votes in the Police and Crime Commissioner Election have been announced. They are: Festus Akinbusoye (Conservative) - 51,700 (42.4%) David Michael (Labour) - 42,708 (35%) Jas Parmar (Liberal Democrats) - 15,983 (13.1%) Patrick Hamill (Independent) - 8,279 (6.8%) Antonio Vitiello (English Democrats) - 3,387 (2.8%) We are now moving to the second phase of the Count and expect a final result in an hour or two.

‘Utterly Absurd’ that Remote Council Meetings No Longer Permitted, Say Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats
From today, May 7th, councils in England are no longer permitted to hold meetings remotely, after the Government did not legislate to extend their ability to do so and a High Court Claim to establish councils' ongoing legal right to do so was lost. Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Christine McHugh has commented on the 'utterly absurd' circumstances that see Councils compelled to meet in-person even while indoor gatherings are still banned on public health grounds, while also warning that progress in public access and participation in Council meetings held remotely is at risk of being lost.

John Bunyan rapid testing site relocating to Faraday Community Centre
The rapid Coronavirus testing centre is moving to Faraday Community Centre to enable the reopening of the John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre for leisure activities.
