Henry Vann, Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner for Bedford and Kempston has slammed as "totally inadequate" a government scheme supposed to help families facing the loss of their homes.
Responding to the Mayor's decision to authorise the launch of a consultation next month on a proposal to move to a two tier schools system in Bedford Borough, the Liberal Democrats have demanded that people are able to make up their minds on the basis of the 'whole picture.'
Residents are hopeful of an end to years of parking misery after it was confirmed that parking restrictions will be introduced along a street plagued by parking overspill from the University of Bedfordshire's Polhill Campus in Bedford.
The crisis in education funding which left schools in Bedford Borough facing a £500,000 budget shortfall must be resolved immediately, the Liberal Democrats have demanded. A government error in forecasting the number of students wanting to stay in education after the age of 16 caused schools and colleges nationwide to be short of funding for sixth form students from September this year. Liberal Democrats have discovered that the blunder saw schools in Bedford Borough entering this financial year at the beginning of April facing a combined shortfall of around £500,000 in their budget allocations.
Responding further to the Chancellor's budget yesterday, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said:"The Government has been desperate to claim it can make significant efficiency savings but without saying where."
The Liberal Democrats' Manifesto for Bedford Borough has identified 'Six to Fix' for Bedford Borough. These are the areas we have identified as being in the most urgent need of action to improve things for local residents. One of these areas is education, where standards are too low. We must raise GCSE results to above the national average.
