A post on Twitter on Sunday by a member of a vocal group which took part in the Bedford Busking Fest declared that "Bedford had a great vibe today." I couldn't agree more, and I would add that that vibe extended across the whole weekend, not just on Sunday, and also to a range of events in addition to the Busking Festival. The performing arts festival Bedfringe continued with a number of events over its middle weekend at a variety of venues, while on Saturday it was great to welcome Proms in the Park back to Bedford Park for the first time in a number of years. The fireworks and light show to round it off could not doubt be enjoyed from across town! The busking festival continued on Sunday with a diverse range of performers, adding a lovely extra dimension to a trip into town. Also on Sunday, a very special charity football match took place at the New Eyrie, home of Bedford Town F.C.
The Woodland Trust have announced a Free Trees for Schools & Communities project.
Following on from the recent opening of a brand new medical centre at the popular Church Lane Development, Mayor Dave Hodgson joined local Liberal Democrat Ward Councillors and others to mark more good news for the site recently, as works began on the construction of a new Iceland store. The new store is being constructyed at the oppostie end of the redeveloped site from the Aldi store, and will be open as early as this summer.
Bedford Town Centre's record of bucking the trend in the face of the crisis for UK High Streets was the focus of a report on BBC Look East last night. In his introductino, the newsreader declares that Bedford is 'the High Street fighting back against out-of-town stores and the internet'. The report includes the facts and figures which illustrate how Bedford has increased footfall in contrast to the national trend of falling numbers of visitors to high streets, and features comments from Mayor Dave Hodgson, seen here during his interview in The Arcade.
