Conservatives can’t be trusted with public finances

At Wednesday's Full Council Meeting Finance Portfolio Holder Councillor Michael Headley outlined the plan to reduce the council's funding gap this year. The plan sets out the measures that are already being taken to balance the budget in the face of unprecedented financial challenges that are impacting local authorities across the country. After years of Conservative government cuts to local government, councils (like all residents) are facing record high inflation, soaring energy prices and stagnant economic growth.

Helping People with Disabilities to Stay in Their Own Home - £400,000 More for Home Adaptations and Improvements

Amongst the decisions taken at the recent Council Executive meeting, I'm pleased to report that we committed an additional £400,000 for home adaptations and improvements which help people with disabilities live comfortably and independently in their own home. We allocated the funding from the early achievement of budget efficiency savings in the current year, and those savings will make a real difference through improvements which enable people to move around their own home more freely and to use essential facilities.

Government Slashes £1.3m from Bedford Borough Schools

Schools across Bedford Borough are facing a combined cut of £1.3m as their budgets are slashed by the Conservative Government. The amount allocated to Bedford Borough for each child in school is being cut, leaving the whole area with over a million pounds less to fund our schools in 2019/20.
