Liberal Democrat Mayor Dave Hodgson has announced a £1 million boost for local road and pavement repairs and resurfacing. The cash injection continues the fight back against years of chronic underinvestment by the former Conservative County Council which left streets in Bedford Borough crumbling and unsafe. Thanks to Dave Hodgson and the Liberal Democrats, if the extra funding is approved by the Full Council an additional £4 million will have been invested within two years in the Borough's roads and pavements over and above the level of funding under the old Tory County Council.
As part of the Council's ongoing efforts to find a sustainable method for treating the borough's residual waste, the Mayor, Portfolio Holder and Council officers are to visit the UK's first full scale autoclave plant for the treatment of household waste.
Mayor Dave Hodgson has described today's rail fare rises as 'another kick in the teeth' for Bedford rail users. Rail fares have risen by a further 2.7% - a rise that Mayor Dave has called 'totally unjustifiable'.
At Wednesday's Full Council Meeting Finance Portfolio Holder Councillor Michael Headley outlined the plan to reduce the council's funding gap this year. The plan sets out the measures that are already being taken to balance the budget in the face of unprecedented financial challenges that are impacting local authorities across the country. After years of Conservative government cuts to local government, councils (like all residents) are facing record high inflation, soaring energy prices and stagnant economic growth.
