Twinwoods Incinerator Turned Down: The Right Result!

I was delighted to receive an email from the Department of Communities & Local Government yesterday morning carrying the excellent news that the local decision to refuse planning permission for the proposed waste plant at Twinwoods near Thurleigh has been upheld. This plant would have caused real disruption to local communities, creating an unacceptable increase in lorry traffic in nearby villages and harming the enviroment, working against efforts to increase recycling.

Get Set to Welcome Olympic and Paralympic Athletes to Bedford Borough

It is now confirmed that Bedford Borough will host 14 Paralympic teams and an Olympic team for pre-games training in the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. The fact that our Borough will be welcoming so many teams from around the world - more than anywhere else in the country except sailing competition host Weymouth - is something I think we can be very proud of locally. It's a testament to Bedford's sporting culture and heritage, to the sporting facilities we enjoy and to welcome that the teams know they will receive when making our Borough their pre-games base.

All-Day Bus Pass Use Saved

In excellent news for users of the free bus pass for older and disabled residents, we are able to confirm that following successful negotiations with commercial bus operators free travel before 9.30am will now continue in Bedford Borough. This is an extra benefit that is on top of the national scheme that only allows free travel 'off peak,' after 9.30am. Prior to becoming Mayor I campaigned with colleagues to establish and protect the best possible scheme for local pensioners and disabled bus users, and now as Mayor I'm delighted that we've been able to protect the local addition to the national scheme and ensure that the free bus pass can be used all day.

The Need for Fuel Fairness in Bedford Borough Grows More Urgent - Sign our Petition

The fact that petrol and diesel prices have soared to record levels across the country has received a lot of media attention lately. You might think that as average prices increase generally, it would provide an opportunity for the local fuel retailers to allow local prices charged at the pump here to find a level generally comparable to those charged elsewhere. You would sadly be wrong, however, as the facts show that the rank unfairness suffered by motorists and businesses in Bedford is continuing, and the gap of around 5 pence between the cheapest prices here for petrol and diesel and those charged in nearby towns is being maintained. This is utterly indefensible. The rising prices make the need for fuel fairness in Bedford Borough even more urgent, as household budgets are strained further and businesses are left at a growing disadvantage.

Oyster-Style Smart Card to Make Bus Use More Convenient and Better Value

The recent news that we have been successful in securing funding to deliver our plans for an Oyster-style smart card for use on local buses across Bedford Borough is great news for local public transport. As I've said previously, there is still some way to go to plan and agree all of the details. We need to make sure the bus operators are happy with the scheme and fully signed up, or else a number of the benefits of having one, simple card to make getting around the borough easier and better value will be lost. So it's better to make sure we get it right than to rush it and briing in a scheme that doesn't deliver the radical improvement for bus users that we all want to see.

Full Steam Ahead in Support of East West Rail for Bedford

I have long campaigned with colleagues for the delivery of an East West Rail line between Bedford and Oxford to the West and Bedford to Cambridge (and beyond) to the East. Re-opening these links to major centres such as Oxford and Cambridge and to main lines to the east and west would provide a tremendous boost for our local economy, helping to attract investment and support jobs and growth. I was therefore delighted last autumn when the Government announced its commitment to deliver the Western section of the East-West Railway, between Bedford and Oxford and Bedford and Aylesbury.
