A Time to Work Together to Get the Best for Our Borough

As was widely-reported earlier this month, Bedford Borough Conservatives sadly broke their pledge to cast aside party politics and deliver a joint budget for the benefit of local residents, and instead didn't even vote on the most important decision the Council takes. This was extremely disappointing as, as I've said many times before, the extraordinarily tough times we are in require everyone to work together to get the best for our borough. My monthly column in last week's Times and Citizen newspaper was on the subject of the difficult financial climate and the need to stand up to the challenges we face, and if you haven't seen it yet, the article follows below:

Bringing Bedford Park Café Back into Use

A number of residents have contacted me in recent times to ask if and when the Bedford Park Café building will be brought into use as a café, and my response to date has always been that I have authorised the necessary work there and hope to see it operating as soon as possible. That's why I'm very pleased that after essential safety and refurbishment work, I'm now able to say that the building is almost ready for full use as a cafe and the Council is advertising for potential operators to come forward and tender for the contract.

Launch of New Canoe Pass and Slalom Facility - Boost for Sporting Activity on the River

We are all rightly proud of the beautiful River Great Ouse in Bedford, but there is one way in particular in which we can make even more of it for the benefit of local residents and visitors. I'm referring to increasing opportunities for more people to actually get on the river themselves and enjoy it for sports and leisure activities. Last year, the Council joined up with the Environment Agency to publish a 'Waterspace Strategy' for Bedford, which focused on how we could really make the most of our fantastic river for the community as a whole. In addition to seeking to introduce more opportunities for leisure boating such as punting or rowing boats, it also looked at improving sporting access to the river, and with that in mind I was delighted to attend the opening of the new Duckmill Weir Canoe Pass and Slalom facility last weekend.

Another Major Bypass Hurdle Overcome as we Work to Get Bedford Moving

The crucial final section of the Bedford Western Bypass received planning permission just a few weeks ago, signalling another major milestone in this much-anticipated project. There are still obstacles to overcome surrounding land-ownership along the long-established route, but we are making progress all the time, with preparatory work actually taking place on site.
