£1 million Roads and Pavements Boost - The Fightback Against Years of Crumbling Roads Continues

I am very pleased to have announced an additional £1 million of funding in the current financial year for road and footpath repairs. Sadly, the former Conservative County Council left an appalling legacy of crumbling, unsafe roads, and a vast backlog of necessary works. It was clear to me that this had to be a priority for the new Council, and Liberal Democrat colleagues and I were successful in ensuring that an extra £2 million was invested in the roads last year over and above the funding level of the old County Council after we forced another £1 million into the budget. The new funding boost means an extra £2million again this year. This means more roads being resurfaced and repaired right across the Borough.

Memorial in Cardington to the 48 people who died in the R101 Airship Crash in 1930

80th Anniversary of R101 Disaster

Today is the 80th anniversary of the R101 airship disaster. The R101 was built at Cardington, of course, and set off from there on its first, and tragically final, overseas voyage on October 4th 1930. It was an honour to attend a service of remembrance at Cardington Church on Sunday, and to sit amongst men and women who recall the working airship sheds as we collectively remembered all those who lost their lives in the disaster.

10:10:10 Climate Change Event at the Harpur Suite Today

I was at the Harpur Suite earlier to open the Council's 10:10:10 climate change event which took place today. 10:10:10 is a 'global day of doing' this Sunday and is being supported by the 10:10 initiative, to which the Council signed up and committed itself to cutting its carbon emissions by 10% by April 2011. The event saw teams from the Council and a range of other bodies offering support and advice around actions people can take this Sunday and also in their day-to-day lives to help protect the environment, while also cutting their own energy bills.

Taking Action to Deal with the Problem of Verge Parking

Unlawful parking on verges can be a real blight in local neighbourhoods. Sometimes the problem is caused by lazy, inconsiderate parking, while in other cases there are genuine issues over a lack of space for local residents to park their vehicles. However, there is no escaping the fact that it can be a real problem. In many neighbourhoods, churned up verges are a real eyesore, while verge parking can be hazardous to road users and pedestrians and can block access to emergency vehicles. In the past, Bedford Borough Council effectively turned a blind eye to the problem. There was next-to-no enforcement of verge parking laws due to the difficulty in carrying it out. While it is undoubtedly a difficult issue, I am not prepared to accept inaction on this, and that is why the Council is now tackling the problem.

Town Centre Toilets - Deep Clean Programme Launched Today

I launched the new programme of 'deep cleans' of all the public toilets in the town centre today. I was at the toilets by the bus station, under Allhallows car park today, where I tried out the high-powered steam cleaning machine that will be used there on Sunday and Monday. Many residents have told me that the bus station toilets are are not as good as other public conveniences, but of course with the toilets due to be knocked down as part of the redevelopment of this area of the town centre, we are not going to spend vast amounts of taxpayers' money refurbishing them. I have instructed that this deep clean takes place to ensure good standards of hygiene, however, to be followed by a continuing programme in the coming weeks at each of the other town centre facilities.

Western Bypass - I'll use Compulsory Purchase to Ensure Final Section Will Go Ahead as Soon as Possible

I have announced this week that, with a funding mechanism in place for the crucial final section of the Bedford Western Bypass, I will use Compulsory Purchase Order powers to overcome the final main barrier to the project and secure the land needed for it to go ahead. There are three parties with landholdings on the route of the 'missing link' between the A428 at Bromham and the A6 at Clapham, including the Council, and one of them is simply being obstructive. I will have no hesitation in using a Compulsory Purchase Order to make sure the project goes ahead as soon as possible.
